I’m a filmmaker and artist based in Los Angeles, California, originally from Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
My films have screened at MoMA Doc Fortnight, Lincoln Center’s Art of The Real, Sheffield Doc/Fest, Visions du Réel and others. I’ve worked as a cinematographer internationally, including the US, Brazil, China, the South Pacific, Europe and Central Africa, and have contributed to Oscar-nominated and Emmy-winning documentaries. I work as an editor, graphics artist and sound designer on films and installations.

THE DIRECTOR
ALEX TYSON is a Los Angeles-based filmmaker and artist. His mid-length film Mountain Fire Personnel won the Prix du Jury at Visions du Réel 2015 and premiered at MoMA Doc Fortnight. His short The Registry was commissioned by Sheffield Doc/Fest in 2021. Additional screenings include Lincoln Center's Art of the Real, GFFIS (Seoul), The Underground Museum (LA), Brooklyn Academy of Music (NYC), and Now Instant Image Hall (LA). As cinematographer, he contributed to the Oscar-nominated Gasland (2010) and the Emmy-winning LA 92 (2017); as editor, Hans Baumann's Maids of Petroleum (Locarno 2026). His work has appeared on HBO, National Geographic, BBC, and PBS. He received the 2011 Cinema Eye Honor for Outstanding Achievement in Graphic Design and Animation.
His practice engages landscape and American empire as recurring subjects. The Hike at Amboy is his first narrative feature as director.
